Sturrock: New Shrimpers boss

Sturrock: 'We're down to the bare bones'

After just one defeat in the last nine matches the Shrimpers sit in seventh place one point away from the play-off positions after their 2-1 win over Barnet at Roots Hall Tuesday evening.

It's been a great achievement by a small squad that have played five games in 22 days and have a sixth on Saturday at home to Northampton as injuries start to take their toll.

Luggy has been looking to use the emergency loan system since it opened two weeks ago but has yet to find the right player, or they haven't wanted to drop down to the fourth tier.

Hopefully the club's rise up the table will help then believe that Southend is the place to be!

Sturrock told www.echo-news.co.uk: "Ideally it would be great if we could bring in a couple of loan players. We're down to the bare bones and don't have many other people to call on but I don't want to disrupt the team so it's a difficult call to make. If you bring in loan players then you have to play them really and the boys have been doing well in the last few weeks so we will have to see how the squad are feeling this week before making any decisions."

Luggy placed two youth players, Lyle Della-Verde and Alex Woodyard and teenage striker Kyle Asante on the bench for the vital victory over the Bees.

News is not good for Mark Phillips (groin) and midfielder Anthony Grant (concussion) to return against the Cobblers but the others may return.

Sturrock continued: "We're hopeful Kane (Ferdinand) and Harry (Crawford) will be OK and Barry (Corr) should be able to start. He was feeling his hamstring when he got to the ground on Tuesday so we didn't take a risk and that means he should be fine to play Saturday."
