Steve fixes the squad as Jimmy is shown the door

Jimmy Corbett
Corbett has been a long sufferer from injury and has been out for most of the season and therefore it seemed to be the only decision that the management team could make. Despite this, the Hackney born attacker will not leave Southend without his name engraved in the memories of Southend fans.’ It was of course Corbett’s right foot strike in penalties that won the first round LDV Vans tie against the auld enemy Colchester in October of 2004. Other memories of the twenty five year old include a stunning volley against Scunthorpe as well as a useful forward partnership with Tesfaye Bramble in the 2003/2004 season.

It is without doubt that Jimmy is a fantastic talent, so good, that Premiership Blackburn Rovers spent £525,000 to bring the player from Gillingham. After five years without a first team performance Corbett was loaned out first to Portsmouth and then to Darlington where he gained the opportunity of first team football.

Jimmy then moved to Southend were he shone in the opening games of Steve Wignall’s short reign, notably the first game of the season against Cheltenham were Corbett won a vital penalty. Corbett also featured as new manager Steve Tilson took over. It was Tilson’s first game in charge against Rochdale where Corbett scored and was a vital clog in the 4-0 win. However Corbett’s fitness declined and he lost his place in the team. A combination of injury problems and other players’ good performances ensured that Corbett never really regained his place in the team.

TLG wish Jimmy all the best in the future.
