It's snow joke - let's hope the pitch is fit for Tuesday
Referee Paul Armstrong arrived at Roots Hall shortly after 2.00pm and inspected the playing surface for some twenty-five minutes. "The pitch is frozen solid" said Armstrong. "The main consideration was that a quarter of the pitch, which is completely shaded, would require one type of footwear while the other three quarters of the pitch, which is also frozen, but has not got the ice on top, would obviously necessitate the players having a different type of footwear. "I think that you would be asking players to compensate when they are in particular areas of the field of play, and I think that and player safety being paramount these days, is the main reason behind the decision to postpone tomorrow's fixture."

The game is in the process of being re-scheduled for Tuesday 8th January, 7.45pm kick-off. Once this has been confirmed details will be published immediately advises the official Southend United web-site www.southendunited.co.uk.
