Southend United v York City - Preview

Last updated : 11 October 2002 By Mark Wallis
Jay Smith was undoubredly man-of-the-match at Bury; his starting place is guarenteed.
Following their much publishised troubles of last season, Terry Dolan's visitors from the beautiful city of York come to Roots Hall one point and two place ahead of Newman's men, and with Southend sitting in ninth spot, the host will be hoping to elevate themselves into a play-off spot with victory over the Minstermen.

Newman will name an unchanged side from the one that demolished Bury seven days ago, although striker Graeme Jones is playing his last match before serving a one-match suspension, having notched up his fifth booking of the season at Gigg Lane.

David McSweeney has now returned to full time training, but he's not ready to be included in the squad and should play for the reserves against Brentford on Wednesday night.

Of course York will once again include twice Southed player player Lee Nogan in their ranks, and all United supporters know that Nogan always seens to score against the Shrimpers, but if the last home match, a 1-0 win over Exeter City, is anything to go by then he'll hardly have a sniff of goal. Coincidently York also beat Exeter 1-0 down in Devon last weekend.

York, who took the unique move of changing their name from 'Football Club' to 'Soccer Club' in the summer did the double over the Blues last season. United crashing to a desperately poor 1-0 defeat at Roots Hall in February after Mark Rawle's early goal at Bootham Crescent in October didn't prove to be enough to prevent Southend from slipping to defeat.

Southen's last victory against York came in October 2000, Trevor Fitzpatrick netting the only goal of the game in what was David Webb's first home match of his third managerial spell at Roots Hall.

Let's hope United can clock up another victory ojn Saturday to make it three wins on the trot and send the Shrimpers soaring into the play-offs.
