Southend United v Shrewsbury Town Preview

Last updated : 11 April 2002 By
Around 1000 Shrewsbury supporters are expected to travel to Roots Hall on Saturday hoping to see their team earn three points and be hopeful of a Scunthorpe defeat at Darlington which would see the Shrews move into a play-off spot with one game remaining.

Although there's nothing so exciting if you're a Blues fan except a bit of pride and to reach 11th place in Division Three, which is realistically the highest position Blues can attain this season. Rather ironically Blues travelled to Gay Meadow, Shrewsbury in April 2000 in a game Shrewsbury had to win to avoid relegation into the Conference, which they duly did beating Blues 2-1 on that April afternoon, and Chester City being the unlucky club to drop out of the league. How times change, only for Blues its another season of mid table mediocrity and supporters can, at the moment, only dream of being in with a chance of promotion, until come August of course!

The programme line ups for Blues 7-1 victory over Shrewsbury in 1964.
Shrewsbury are making their 23rd appearance at Roots Hall on Saturday of which Shrewsbury have only been successful on three occasions. Blues have recorded some good results against their Shropshire opponents including a 4-1, a 5-1 and a 7-1 victory.

Shrewsbury first visited the Hall in Blues inaugural season at Roots Hall which Blues won 1-0. Town won 2-1 the following season but season 1957/58 saw Blues hammer their Shropshire opponents 5-1. Season 1959/60 saw a 2-1 win for the Shrimpers which was followed with a 1-1 draw in October 1961. A 3-1 win for Blues almost a year later was followed by an emphatic 7-1 win for Blues in April 1964. Four months later Blues could only manage one goal against Shrewsbury but that one was enough for maximum points. A 2-0 victory in season1965/66 was followed by a seven season gap before the clubs next met in season 1972/73, although Blues once again came out on top winning 2-0. That was also the final score the following season. Season 1975/76 saw Shrewsbury win at the Hall for just the second time 3-1, and they made it two wins out of two in season1978/79 winning 1-0. Shrewsbury didn't visit Roots Hall again until the 1990/91 season that saw a 2-1 win for Blues. Then it was season 1998/99 when Shrewsbury visited again with Blues winning 2-1. A 3-2 victory for Blues followed the season after whilst last seasons encounter finished 0-0.
