The Football League has decided to step in early and sanction the postponement of Saturday afternoon's match between the Shrimpers and Silkmen of Macclesfield.

At least everyone knows where they stand 48 hours before the game and though the weather is forecast to improve, it's not only the state of the pitch that counts here.

With thick layers of snow in and about the Roots Hall stands which, as the tempatures drop overnight, turn to ice, the safety of the fans has to be taken into account.

A statement on the club's official website read: "The safety of our supporters is paramount and with almost half of every stand also under snow, with more predicted over the next 48 hours, it has been decided that an early postponement was in the best interests of all concerned. A new date for the fixture will be confirmed in due course."

Any supporters who have purchased tickets for the League Two clash, hold on to them, they will still be valid when the game is re-arranged.
