Southend United v Ipswich Town - Preview

Last updated : 15 July 2003 By Mark Wallis

James Corbett will be one of many players making his first appearance in a United shirt.
First Division promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town, who enjoyed an UEFA Cup run only last season provide the opposition at Roots Hall as Wignall's new look United side will recieve their first public viewing.

The new Shrimpers squad will feature no less than seven new signings; goalkeeper Carl Emberson and defender Duncan Jupp, both free signings from Luton Town as well as Jamie Stuart (defender, Bury), Mark Warren (defender, Colchester United), James Corbett (midfielder, Blackburn Rovers), Drewe Broughton (striker, Kidderminster Harriers) and £25,000 signing from Barnet, midfielder Mark Gower.

Joining the new boys will be a series of trialists made up from defender Che Wilson (Cambridge City), goalkeeper Ryan Robinson, and midfielders Darren Dunning (Blackburn Rovers), Robert Betts (Coventry City) and Craig Strachan (Southampton) who is the younger brother of Gavin, who of course spent a spell with the Shrimpers towards the end of last season.

United last met Ipswich in a pre-season fixture slightly less than two years ago when the Shrimpers were defeated 2-0 at Town's plush Bent Lane training ground, a year previously the Shrimpers lost 4-0 at the same venue. Despite the 'behind closed doors' billing of those fixtures we at The Little Gazette were lucky enough to gain entry to tge mayches which were great wortkouts against experienced Ipswich sides.

The public were last granted permission to view the two sides five years ago at Roots Hall when goals from Julian Hails and David Whyte sealed a 2-1 victory.

The two sides last met in a League fixture back in February 1997 when the Shrimpers, in the Division One relegation season, ground out a goalless draw with Town at Roots Hall. Three months earlier the fixture at Portman Road had seen Andy Rammell score for United in a 1-1 draw,

We hope to see you all at Roots Hall tonight, but please bear in mind that only the East and West stands are open for away supporters this evening.

We'll meet again in a weeks time fior the visit of Gillingham!
