Southend United v Charlton Athletic - Preview

Damon Searle is struggling to be fit.
Following a superb performance, albeit an undeserved set back in terms of the result, Southend will be looking for much of the same as Alan Curbishley brings a full strength Charlton Athletic side to Roots Hall.

Danny Maye, Stephen Broad and Tony Richards, who all missed Thursday draw with Heybridge Swifts, will all definately miss out once again and also struggling to be fit are left back Damon Searle and striker Mark Rawle.

Trialist Rio Alderton has now definately left the Club whilst there is also no place in tomorrow's squad for former Grimsby Town midfielder Wayne Burnett. Three other trialist however, Neil Jenkins - who looks as if he's impressing the supporters and coaching staff alike - and Aston Villa duo Jay Smith and John McGrath should all play a large part in proceedings.

Of course the Addicks will have one very familiar face in their team, with Chris Powell, undoubtebly United's most popular ever player, likely to start the match. Powell picked up a slight carf strain during Athletic's friendly at Stevenage Borough during the week, but he's confident that he'll be fit to face who he claims to be his favourite team.
Current assistant manager Steve Tilson scored when United last beat Charlton.

Southend last met Charlton on 1st August 2000 in Ronnie Pountney's Testimonial match, in which the Premiership side won a tight encounter 2-0. The last time Southend beat Athletic was on 5th March 1996, when goals from Keith Dublin, Andy Thomson and Steve Tilson handed the Shrimpers a superb 3-0 win at The Valley in a Division One match.
