Southend United v Cambridge United - Preview

Last updated : 25 August 2002 By Mark Wallis
David Lee grabbed an LDV brace in January 2001.
Derby matches with Cambridge United bring back good memories for Southend United supporters, for it reminds them of more successful times, Cambridge going straight from the Fourth to Second Division in successive seasons along with the Shrimpers.

Matches against the U's always brought out the very best in local hostility, and tomorrow's encounter should see veruy much of the same, as the two side's meet for a League match for the first time in over three years. The last League meeting ending in a 3-0 reverse for Southend following an abysmal performance in what was Alvin Martin's final away match as manager. After German midfielder Lars Unger had chipped a lob against the home side's crossbar, veteren striker John Taylor opened Cambridge's account, volleying home from the edge of the area after linesman Joe Ross had failed to spot a most blatant handball.

Southend have met Cambridge since however, the third division Shrimpers beating their second division opponents 3-1 in the second round of the 2000-01 LDV Vans Trophy, a brace from makeshift striker David Lee and another from Russell Williamson continuing United's march into the Area Final.

A big crowd is expected at Roots Hall on Monday, make sure you all cheer the Blues onto victory!...
