Jay Smith.
Following a pre-season trial, Jay Smith arrived at Southend in August on a three-month loan deal from Aston Villa, making his debut during the 1-0 victory at Oxford United.

Smith scored on his home debut, the clincher in the 2-1 August Bank Holiday victory over Cambridge United, before going on to impress the Southend supporters with his dimuntive midfield displays, with the best undoubtedly coming in the magnificent comeback at Bury where Smith helped turn the game on it's head as United turned a 0-1 half time deficit into a superb 3-1 victory.

The London-born 22-year old has signed until the Summer of 2004.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the Shrimpers will not be signing West Ham United midfielder Leon Britton or Newcastle United winger Chris Moore despite both players impressing in recent reserve team fixtures.
