Simpson: Unhappy

Simpson: 'Whatever we seemed to try we were struggling a bit'

The Shrimpers returned back to League Two after their 2-0 victory over the Silkmen, their ninth in 10 games.

Ryan Hall's terrific rising volley from 15 yards opened the scoring, followed up by Kane Ferdinand's close range effort as the home side failed to clear their defensive lines quick enough after Peter Gilbert had met Hall's corner with a powerful header.

Macclesfield had their moments, especially in the second half when good work from loanee keeper Luke Daniels denied them, but Town boss Gary Simpson had to admit after the game that his side were second best on the day which the stats clearly show.

Simpson told BBC Radio Manchester: "A difficult game, with difficult conditions and a difficult team to play against. We're disappointed that we haven't played better, but sometimes you're only allowed to play as well as they let you play. Whatever we seemed to try we were struggling a bit, and sometimes you've just got to hold your hands up."

He also had plenty of praise for scorer of the first goal Ryan Hall telling the Echo: 'Hall is a quality player for them. He has everything you need and scored a quality goal.'
