Sergant Robert "Billy" Moore has been talking to the Shrimpers squad before their big game with the 100% boys of Torquay United Saturday afternoon at Roots Hall.
Moore, a Westcliff boy, is part of the First Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment and was awarded the Military Cross, the country's third highest military honour, for his service and beyond in Afghanistan.
Shrimpers skipper Craig Easton told www.southendunited.co.uk: "Billy explained how he had the backs of his pals and they had his back also. It was a real inspiration as to leadership and teamwork and I am in complete admiration for him. What we do each day is nothing in comparison to the work the Armed Forces perform around the world, but you can relate to that team mentality. Billy spoke about his experiences in Afghanistan and the injuries he sustained in combat and it's unbelievable what these guys do."
As for the day itaelf, there will be a number of military-themed activities including a combat display on the hallowed turf, a special Blue Belles army dance, face painting, and specially themed matchday music.
Outside Roots Hall before the game they'll be a collection by the Help for Heroes charity.
Billy himself will also be there, discussing his experiences while serving in Afghanistan.
The club are offering a special ticket promotion where a family of four, (two adults and two children), will be allowed in the family enclosure for only £20, and if you want to take advantage of this special promotion the queues on the day can be avoided by having the match tickets sent as tickets-by-text direct to their mobile phones.
