Blues captain and inspirational centre-half Adam Barrett will be in the squad for Saturday's league opener against Huddersfield at Roots Hall.

Adam has been involved in training during the last week after picking up a knee injury in the pre-season friendly against Ipswich.

He told the official site: "I could have done with another week but I have been training the last couple of days and have come through that OK. Now I'm just hoping to play on Saturday. We knew it would be quite a close run thing to get me fit and our physio John Stannard and fitness and conditioning coach Laurence Bloom have put in lots of hours and a lot of hard work over the last few weeks. It has paid off because I have come through training the last few days."

Meanwhile, midfielder Lee Sawyer, who was sent back to parent club Chelsea for tests after a scan picked up a fractured rib, is hoping to return to training next week where he may have a chance of returning for Southend's away fixture at Walsall.

Winger Damien Scannell has even got over his bout of swine flu, sadly the ankle injury is proving a touch more annoying and he will face at least another six weeks out of the side.
