Shrimpers Close To Signing Mystery Striker

Last updated : 23 June 2005 By Matt Donohue

It has been well documented that Southend chief Steve Tilson has been looking for a striker ever since the release of Tes Bramble. Bramble has since found pastures new in the form of League Two Stockport whilst the Blues have continued to struggle to find a replacement able enough to lead the line a division higher. The search, one would imagine, has had to be a quite specific one as the man brought into the club should be able to have the strength to play with physically weaker goal-getter Freddy Eastwood. Of course it is not only a bigman needed to join the Blues as the neat passing style of the seaside team requires the player to have a good pair of feet.

So far, Tilson’s signings have been perfect as nearly every player that he has brought into the club has gone onto make a significant impact in the club’s promotion campaign of the previous year. However the 38 year-old gaffer has had disappointments in the transfer market in the past, not least when Colchester old boy Scott McGleish favoured Northampton Town of the Shrimpers during last summer’s transfers. “Like we learnt last year though there are no guarantees in the game and I’m sure he will consider all of his options carefully but hopefully he will pick us because he’s an excellent player,” Said Tilson as he commented on his mystery man.

Grant Holt
Holt is a possibility but it really could be anyone!
Grant Holt had been previously targeted by Southend and although the rumour mill has quietened on Holt’s moves away from current club Rochdale he would fit the description. “We have has feedback from the player’s agent and we know he would be interested in coming here but there is a lot of interest in him so we will have to wait and see what he decides,” Tilson communicated to the Southend Evening Echo. Holt has of course attracted interest from a number of other clubs such as Yeovil and Swansea so if he were to be the mystery man it would be a great scoop for the Shrimpers.

Holt is of course is in contract and therefore would need a large fee for his current club to release him. The Evening Echo has reported that the mystery man’s would only allow him to move if a six figure was paid. This again would match to the description of Holt as the Dale have made it quite clear that Holt would not leave on the cheap.

Although there are a number of players that are in contract and could be signed by clubs in League One now appears to be a possibility. The next few weeks will be very interesting to see if Tilson can provide the fans with the answer to the mystery striker.
