Eastwood: 'It isn't nice to see Southend struggling and I hope they stay up'
Striker Freddy Eastwood has won a poll run in the Evening Echo to decide who was the Southend United player of the naughties, receiving 62% of the total vote!
His 65 goals in 135 appearances, while taking part in two successive promotions which included scoring in a play-off final at Cardiff, was enough to see off ex-Captain Kevin Maher in 2nd and winger Mark Gower in the bronze position.
Eastwood told www.echo-news.co.uk: "I'm delighted to have won the award. I really enjoyed my time at the club and it's a big thing that the fans have voted me player of the decade. I would like to thank them for picking me and I'm very proud to have won it."
Freddy named the day Southend gained promotion to the Championship at Swansea's Liberty Stadium, helped in a big way by his magnificent brace, as his favourite moment as a Shrimper.
And he still hopes to return to the club to finish off his career, when hopefully he'll be in a team that gets paid!
Freddy concluded: "It isn't nice to see Southend struggling and I hope they stay up. I look out for the results every week and I know there are a few issues there but I do want to go back there one day. Hopefully the club will be more stable by then."
