Gilbert: Back in action

Gilbert: 'We're glad to now be having a break, both mentally and physically'

Hurrah, February is over, the knackered Shrimpers squad can take put their feet up, well, until serious training starts up again as Paul Sturrock's boys work on the vital game against Morecambe at the weekend and the chance to move into the play-off positions at last.

After 9 games in 33 days, ten if the Accrington game hadn't have been called off, aches and pains have hit the Blues in a big way with Kane Ferdinand remaining on the sidelines for the 1-1 draw with Northampton. (We hope he was still injured and it wasn't his agent demanding rest for his client before his move to a Championship club; joking, honestly.)

Sean Clohessy and Barry Corr are carrying on annd playing through their pain, while both Graham Coughlan and Blair Sturrock were both throwing up before taking their places in the team!

And left-back Peter Gilbert, who so nearly scored against his old team on Saturday with a cracking shot that earned the corner that lead to the equaliser, has joined that particular club carrying an injury himself!

Gilbert told www.echo-news.co.uk: "I'm still having problems with my groin, so it is a relief that we don't have a midweek game. We're trying to manage it the best we can and I've been doing exercises to try and make me stronger in that area. But it's been tough and hopefully a bit of a rest will help me this week before we play again."

As he explains, so many matches in so short a time does not only take it out on the player's bodies but up top as well, it's hard to keep concentrating at a level even League Two football demands to keep a run going that has seen only one defeat in nine games and find themselves one point from the magical top seven.

Gilbert continued: "There have been a few lads injured and ill. Some haven't been able to train and have just patched themselves up for the games, so we've done well to get the results we have done. We're glad to now be having a break, both mentally and physically, and I think it will do us good before we're ready to go again."

Stop moaning Pete, with the Crewe away game being the penaultimate of the rearranged fixtures to be played on Tuesday, March 15th, there's only six games this month!
