Shakers vs. Shrimpers Off

Last updated : 31 January 2004 By Robert Craven
The team made the long trip to Greater Manchester yesterday afternoon ahead of an overnight stay, and will have seen the heavy rainfall that is being experienced all over the country. The Blues’ army of supporters were setting out on their journey when Shrimpers Trust travel supreme Chris Berry was informed of the postponement. The coach promptly turned around at Junction 24 of the M25 – the second time the TLG team had been thwarted at Potters Bar on the way to a fixture this season.

The decision to call the clash off came at nine o’clock after Bury officials took a look at the surface, which had been blighted with heavy snowfall on Wednesday and had only just thawed out. The mixture of this occurrence, together with the wet and windy weather experienced all over England, meant that the surface was waterlogged, as confirmed by a local referee. Had the Football League not made the Shakers wait until this morning to see if the match was playable, then Southend supporters may have been saved the aggravation of having to be turned around.

There is no new date fixed yet for the encounter to be rearranged, although Tuesday February 17th is the next free date for both clubs, which is the advised protocol from the Football League. Should the game not be played then, March 9th is the next available date. The Little Gazette will bring you all the news on a new date, without any registration details, as we have it.
