What! Back to Chelsea already

Following a scan this week Lee Sawyer, having just returned to Southend on a six-month loan from Chelsea, was told he had a fractured rib.

The teenage midfield player will find out how long he will be out of the game after returning to Stamford Bridge to be checked out by the Premiership club's own specialists.

Blues boss Steve Tilson told the official site: "Lee took a knock against Chelmsford but we didn't learn about it until a bit later. He played in the next couple of games but it became uncomfortable. We don't know yet how long he will be out for until Chelsea's medical team take a look but he won't be involved on Saturday."

Though losing a player of Sawyer's class is unfortunate, there is plenty of cover in the midfield area for Southend.

Going on the evidence of the last warm-up game at Stevenage, McCormack and Grant will be favourites to start this weekend's opening league fixture against the Terriers at Roots Hall.
