Sawyer back with the Blues: 'I never wanted to leave'

Last updated : 14 July 2009 By exiledessexboy
Though the paperwork will not be completed until later on in the week, Chelsea will allow Lee to take some part in the friendly at Canvey Island to-night, and as he knows most of the team their shouldn't be a problem with him fitting in straight away.

Blues boss Steve Tilson told the official site: "I'm over the moon with bringing Lee back to the Club. He's an exciting young player who we know all about and I am sure supporters will be as delighted as we are with the news."

Lee played for the Shrimpers for three months last season, making 13 appearances while scoring 3 goals.

Sadly transfer rules meant Blues couldn't re-sign him in the January window so he went to Championship Coventry City first, where he only played once, then saw promotion from League Two with Wycombe Wanderers, neither of whom he showed his best form which he is now hoping to recover with Southend.

Tilly continued: "We monitored the situation and when Chelsea contacted us we jumped at the chance. He is a real attacking threat and isn't afraid to put a tackle in so he will definitly add something to the pack."

Lee himself has told Blues World that 'he never wanted to leave' in the first place and he 'hopes to recover his best form' in his second spell with the team.

All good to hear of course, and Lee will even be stronger than last year where he was a class act whatever he did for his next two clubs, but you have to wonder how the other midfield players will be feeling this afternoon?

Is Grant now out of the side, is Moussa's central midfield dreams over, will Macca approve, Christophe for centre-half?!

The signing is welcome yet many may feel this again shows the muddled thinking at the club where transfer poilcy is involved. ('They contacted us'.)

Brushy was only telling us a couple of months ago that 'Sawyer was not a priority'. Now everyone's 'over the moon'.

And then he may have to go back in January causing disruption again, but at least this time the rules are with us and I presume we'll be trying to keep him on for the rest of the season, if Chelsea are OK and the six months have gone well.

Then again as it's the last year of his contract with the West London club they may take a small amount of dosh come the new year.

However, the bottom line is that, if he recreates his early last season form with us, Lee will be the best midfield player in the present squad.

Welcome back Lee and good luck.
