Saddlers Shredded By Super Shrimpers

The sweet smell of victory, in the 13th games since the 2-1 win at Borient, lucky for Southend after all!

Osei Sankofa did come into the side at centre back for the suspended Adam Barrett, and fitted in very well as he had last weekend, while Scott Spencer replaced Matt Paterson who was sent to the bench, though there was talk he was suffering from a cold.

The home side took to the pitch creating history by being the first team to were specially designed purple shirts to help publicise Rotary's global fight to eradicate polio.

However, this game was all about the Moose, man of the match Franck was oustanding, and he may feel central midfield is his best position, but since his return to the left he's put in two great displays and scored three goals.

Let's hope Uncle Ron's rumours that he's accepted the terms of a new two-year contract, he can go on a frebbie in the summer at the moment, and signs it as soon as possible. The SUFC Exiles sponsore player has come of age.

It certainly helped that Walsall, who have a very impressive away record that includes a 2-1 victory at Leeds, had accepted mid-table was fine for them and played the game as it was a post-season testimonial, that and the two-footed tackle on Grant that saw the end of Clayton McDonald!

It was the Moose that opened the scoring on 19 minutes following a, yes long throw-in from Johnny Herd, who may well have seen off the long run of Wolves left backs in his position at last!

McDonald could only head the ball into the path of Franck Moussa on the edge of the box and he unleashed a spectacular volley into the net.

Fourteen minutes later, the Walsall centre back McDonald received his staright red following an ugly challenge on Anthony Grant which could have been avoided as Granty had knocked the ball forward and possession won back without the X-rated tackle.

It was the third time in four matches that Walsall have had a man sent off, and the second against United this season.

There was a brief moment when the Saddlers sensed an equaliser, Matt Richards strinking the Shrimper woodwork in a 25-yard free-kick just before the interval, but other than that it was all the home side with waves of attacking football led by Grant and Moussa.

When your in Southend's lowly position, and had the luck they've had in recent games, you take nothing to chance and want that second goal.

Any nerves were calmed only six minutes into the second half when Moussa crossed from the left for Scott Spencer to head home from close range, his third goal in nine games for the club and a lovely flick into the net from the former Everton man.

Cheers all round for Scott when substituted in the 84th minute, but just as many for young Harry Crawford, who was making his first team debut.

Still time with a minute on the clock for the Moose to complete a good night's work for him and his team when Simon Francis delivered yet another perfect right wing cross and there was Moussa to head in the third goal via the post.

The tunnel king is back digging and Harry might lead to another season in League One after all, roll on Saturday and the lovely city of Bristol.
