May 2006: The last time we played City, it seems a long, long time ago!
It all seems a bit pointless at the moment, worrying about the Carling Cup first round to be played in the second week of August, when we don't know what sort of team we'll have to face Championship side Bristol City anyway, let alone our first league opponents the weekend before, which we'll find out who they are about this time tomorrow!
Anyhow, let's get into the spirit of things.
Full draw below but about our opponents, the Robins of Bristol; shame it's not away, good drinking but now without a trip to our sixth city next season, unless the FA version brings us the Gasmen in the other half of town!
Blues boss Steve Tilson, confident he'll actually have a squad to pick from, accepts a visit from a team that finished in the top ten in the second tier is a difficult draw at any time, let alone the state the club is in at the moment.
Tilly told www.echo-news.co.uk: "Bristol City are a strong Championship side so it's going to be a very difficult game. It's one of the hardest I think we could have got at this stage of the competition but at least we're at home which is want you always want."
Predictable stuff from Tills; but hang on, I'm not sure what Robins assistant boss Keith Millen is on, Keith is second in command to new manager Steve Coppell, but speaking to the Bristol City official site straight after the draw, he may have got Southend mixed up with Southampton!
Millen told www.bcfc.co.uk: "It's a shame we are away, we would have prefered a home tie really. It's a long journey for our fans also. Steve Tilson has a good side at Southend, altough they got relegated last year they play some nice football. It will be a tough fixture but it's certainly one we can win and progress into the next round."
I'll say the odds could be quite good Keith as you could be facing half our youth side!
The club was founded in 1897, when Bristol South End turned professional and changed its name to Bristol City, and were admitted into the Southern League, finishing as runners-up in three of the first four seasons.
In 1900 the club merged with local rivals Bedminster, who had been founded as Southville in 1887.
The side joined the Football League in 1901 and were the only non-London League side south of Birmingham until 1920.
Their first game in the Football League was against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road on September 7th, 1901.

Nice memories of City from when we were a real football club; Freddie's hat-trick of course at their place, but the last time they visited Roots Hall was that late Wayne Gray winner that sealed the League One championship on May 6th, 2006.
Memories; Uncle Ron can't take them away, or charge us for them, I think!
