SHRIMPERS

It might be a small squad but at least they're all fit!

With Christophe back from suspension he should be in a more defensive looking line-up than against Orient, probably replacing Scannell.

The West Yorkshire club are still to record a win at Roots Hall, Southend winning the last two games in Essex 1-0.

Blues boss Steve Tilson told the official site: "Leeds have players like Andy Robinson on their bench and are in fantastic form so this is the toughest game we could be facing. But, at the same time, it's one we are looking forward to. We have been playing well all season and need to keep it going. We should have more points than we do at present and the players here have been fantastic."

Possible Southend United: Mildenhall, Francis, M'Voto, Barrett, Herd, Grant, Christophe, McCormack, Moussa, Barnard, Laurent.

Subs: Joyce, Sankofa, O'Keefe, Sawyer, Scannell, Freedman, Walker.

OPPOSITION

Leeds boss Simon Grayson is expected to have a near full strength squad to choose from including striker Jermaine Beckford Beckford who missed last week's game at Stockport with a hamstring strain.

Centre-back Richard Naylor will not be return after back surgery and full-back Ben Parker is unavailable due to the hamstring strain.

Grayson may return to the side's regular defensive pair with Rui Marques and Patrick Kisnorbo both available. Last weekend they were in the Angola (Marques) and Australia (Kisnorbo) international squads.

Leigh Bromby and Lubomir Michalik who did play against the Hatters kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win, but Marques and Kisnorbo are his usual pair.

Grayson told the local media: "I've got some good options but I've also got a clear idea of what my team will be. Hopefully, it's the right one. There's a fine line between complacency and getting on with the job, but that won't be a problem. We will lose a match sooner or later - hopefully in about two or three months' time - and when you least expect a defeat, you'll probably get one. But we've got a squad who are strong mentally, and they've shown that they can overcome adversity."

As for appearing at a ground that they've had little luck over the last three seasons.

Grayson continued: "Southend is a difficult place to go. It's a tight ground with the fans on top of you. They have some good players and Steve Tilson will have them organised. We know what to expect. But we knew what to expect at Walsall, Wycombe and Colchester and we managed to win there. We want to concentrate on what we do. We feel if we are at it and play to our strengths we've got a great chance of winning."

HISTORY

The club's home is the Elland Road stadium in Beeston, where they have played since their foundation in 1919.

The club's most common nicknames are "Leeds", "United" or "The Whites". Another nickname is "The Peacocks", though this is virtually obsolete. This term stems from the former name of the Elland Road, The Old Peacock Ground, which was in turn named after The Old Peacock pub opposite Elland Road's South Stand.

Leeds United's predecessor team Leeds City FC was formed in 1904, but was forcibly disbanded by The Football League in 1919 in response to allegations of illegal payments to players during the First World War.

A new club, Leeds United, was formed and the club received an invitation to enter the Midland League from the league secretary, Mr. J Nicholson. Leeds United were voted into the Midland League on 31 October 1919, taking the place vacated by Leeds City Reserves. Yorkshire Amateurs, who occupied Elland Road, offered to make way for the new team under the management of former player Dick Ray.

The chairman of Huddersfield Town, Mr. Hilton Crowther loaned Leeds United £35,000, to be repaid when Leeds United won promotion to Division One. He brought Barnsley's manager Arthur Fairclough to Leeds and on 26 February 1920, Dick Ray stepped down to become Fairclough's assistant.

On 31 May 1920, Leeds United were elected to the Football League.

The club have competed at the top level of English football for the majority of their existence, following the disbanding of predecessor Leeds City. Under the management of Don Revie during the 1960s and 1970s, Leeds won a number of domestic and European trophies.

After Revie's departure to manage the England team, Leeds were relegated to the Second Division in 1982, not returning to the top flight until 1990, when they were managed by Howard Wilkinson. Leeds were league champions two seasons later, in 1992.

Following severe financial turmoil, Leeds were relegated to League One for the 2007-08 season. This was the first time the club had dropped below the top two tiers of domestic football in England. Two successive playoff failures see Leeds currently hoping to get out of League 1 at the third time of asking.
