Southend edged closer to an unlikely play-off place thanks to Barnard's second-half penalty in a match where a blustering wind made decent football difficult for both sides.

Blues boss Steve Tilson made the expected one change with centre back Dorian Dervite replacing Sankofa and once again the Frenchman put in an assured peformance with the defence looking sound again after last Friday's second half wobbles.

In a dismal first half Neither side managed a single shot on target but it was the away side, playing in their all yellow strip, who looked the most dangerous.

Martin Kelly cleared from Damian Scannell and a cross from Franck Moussa skimmed off Robinson's head.

Andy Butler blocked Scannell's goalbound effort and Simon Francis drilled a free-kick into the wall before Alan McCormack squandered a great chance after a one-two with Robinson.

Robinson, with five goals in his previous nine matches, should have scored four minutes into the second half.

The striker latched onto a long clearance and keeper Alex Smithies came to meet him but missed the ball.

Robinson turned Andy Butler and had time to place his finish into the gaping net but right-back Tom Clarke did enough to force him to prod wide. Theo, bless, had the decency to pull his shirt over his head!

The good Lord though made amends in the 63rd minute when he grabbed the winner from the penalty spot.

Moussa's driven cross struck Tom Clarke's arm and Barnard made no mistake for his ninth of the season and fourth in six games.

This was a much more assured effort than last week's spot kick against Hartlepool, high into the left hand corner sending Smithies the wrong way in the process.

However, Lee did pick up another booking, along with Francis and Grant, again for showing decent to the referee. This has got to stop mate or there's a two match ban around the corner.

Robinson was denied by Smithies after a Huddersfield defensive mix-up but the home side finished the strongest.

Butler headed just wide and Andy Booth also missed the target before Gary Roberts saw his shot kept out by Steve Mildenhall in stoppage time.

Another week, another Blues three points. Not the prettiest game but we were the better side trying to play the more creative football with the Moose, once again, outstanding, and TLG's MOM for the second week running.

Us SUFC Exiles who placed some hard earned dosh on Franck at the start of the season are starting to feel a touch smug at the moment!
