O'Donovan: 'Everyone has been tremendous to me from the tea lady to the manager'

It was only from a couple of yards but you won't find the striker on loan from the Black Cats complaining, after a tough period where Roy O'Donovon has scored only one goal in two years.

The Cork born 24-year-old told the Echo: "It was nice to get that kind of chance in front of goal and hopefully I can get a few more while I'm here. A few things fell through and then the transfer window shut so I wasn't sure what was going to happen. But this move is perfect for me and perfect for Southend too so I'm delighted to be here and hope to help the club get more good results."

O'Donovan was enthusiastic about his new partnership with eight goal man Lee Barnard.

Roy continued: "I thought he was fantastic. He worked hard and was great to play alongside. I'm looking to show I"m still a decent player and it's great for my confidence to have scored. It's another big game on Saturday now against Oldham and it would be brilliant to get another three points."
