NEWMAN SACKED

SACKED: Rob Newman
The decision, it seems, was made before Saturday's match with Leyton Orient. United managed to pick up a 1-0 victory in that game, but it came following five successive defeats and it was still hardly a convincing display.

A week ago, Southend fans more than displayed theur fury with Newman during the dismal 2-0 Roots Hall defeat against Swansea City, and in what has been a terrible season in which United have lost 21 League matches - only Brighton & Hove Albion in Division One can match that - including an incredible nine at home.

The Orient victory somewhat eased United's relegation worries, but their is no doubt the Shrimpers still need at least another three points to avoid the dreaded drop.

Newman, who was appointed as United boss in October 2001 following the resignation of David Webb had been a player at Roots Hall since the summer of 1998, but his spell in charge was rarely successful, often baffling supporters with some very bizarre tactics, substitutions, and indeed signings.

One of Newman's Assistants, David Crown, will also be leaving the Club this week.

First team coach Stewart Robson will take charge in a caretaker manager role until the end of the season with Steve Tilson as his Assistant.
