McSweeney has signed a new deal
The centre-half, who can also play in the right full-back role, signed a new twelve-month contract at Roots Hall this morning, joining Leon Cort, Neil Jenkins and Tesfaye Bramble in doing so. The local talent, who was a regular in the second-half of the season having missed the early months with an injury sustained in the pre-season friendly against Wimbledon, impressed both Steve Wignall and Stewart Robson in the immediate aftermath of their arrivals, and his offer was no surprise.

On the official club website (www.southendunited.co.uk), McSweeney told the fans, "I'm looking forward to next season". He also tried to put the disappointment of last season behind him, "Hopefully I can have a better run of form this season, without any injuries and prove to the manager I was a worthy choice".

Manager Steve Wignall certainly believes that McSweeney is capable of producing the goods, "I'm very pleased and I'm pleased for David as well", he commented. He too sought to emphasise the positive thinking around the club, stating, "I hope that he has a good season next year, he's a lad you can always rely on".
