United have never met the Hatters in this competition before, but the last Cup meeting came during 2001-02 when United ran out 3-2 FA Cup First Round victors at Roots Hall and before that in 1993-94 when Town beat United 1-0 at Kenilworth Road in the FA Cup Third Round befire eventually progressing to a semi-final defeat against Chelsea.
Southend last reached this stage of the competition, ironically under the guidance of current caretaker boss David Webb, in 2000-01, beating Bristol Rovers 1-0 at Roots Hall courtesy of a first half Martin Carruthers strike.
