King's Lynn v Southend United - Preview

Last updated : 18 July 2002 By Mark Wallis
King's Lynn born Daniel Gay should enjoy a full 90 minutes.
Newman will once again be hoping to get ninety minutes out of some of his players, just as he did out of Darryl Flahavan, Phil Whelan and David McSweeney on Monday at Braintree. Goalkeeper Daniel Gay, playing against his hometown club is virtually guarenteed a full game whilst defenders Leon Cort and Daniel Lunan should have a good work-out.

Following the disappointing draw with Braintree Newman hit out at some of his trialists for the their work rate, tonight however Newman is likely to give more time to Mark Salter, Neil Jenkins and Paulo Martins so his trio can have more of an opportunity to prove themselves. A further trialist, forward Mark Rustem could also feature having missed the first two friendlies through injury.

King's Lynn, relegated from the Dr Martens Premier Division on the final day of last season will be looking to field a full strength side against United as they look to kick-start their bid for a return to the Premier Division with a good pre-season campaign.

Interestingly the last time than we can recall a meeting between the two sides was when United thrashed Lynn 9-0 at Roots Hall in an 1967 FA Cup tie. Just to prove that the result was no one-off, Southend then dispatched Brentwood Town in the next round, 10-1.

As ever, a full report will appear on www.thelittlegazette.com later this evening.
