Kings verdict has certainly calmed a few rather worried supporters, who have been hearing that Brighton had placed a bid of £250,000. There had also been a rumour that Nottingham Forest boss Gary Megson was ready to bid in the region of half-a-million pounds.

Freddy himself has said he doesn’t want to be anywhere else but Roots Hall on numerous occasions, stating to the clubs official website: “I keep saying I want to stay and I really mean it. Come the start of pre-season training I am certain I will still be with Southend.”

Geoffrey King has now added to the debate and said that Freddy is welcome to his wish, as he will not be accepting any offers: “He is not for sale. On Thursday I had two telephone calls within ten minutes of each other, as I was on my way to the Football League Conference in Chester, saying that offers of £500,000 and then £750,000,” King told the official site.

King went on further to say, again to the clubs official website, which the projected fees could have inflated even higher: “At that rate it could have reached £1m by the time I had reached Cambridge! Neither offer had been made though and as I say he is not for sale.”

So after Mr King’s refreshing quotes, it appears that at least Southend will be able to hold onto one player this summer!
