Wilder: Taking the positives

Wilder on Grant: 'He'll have to be a little bit careful in his career'

Poor old Granty, he's been kicked from pillar to post all season as desperate managers have informed their players; 'stop Anthony Grant, you stop Southend United'.

Not far off the mark pre-Bilel Mohsni finding his feet, and scoring boots, and the rest of the squad joining the party which could still end in the play-offs as the U's go in the other direction.

Anyway, the Shrimpers midfielder was nearlly cut in half by a poor challende from Oxford right-back Damian Batt midway through the second half in Southend's 2-1 victory on Tuesday evening at Roots Hall.

Straight red was the decision by Keith Hill but U's boss Chris Wilder was not a happy bunny.

Wilder told www.oxfordmail.co.uk: "I've got to say, the boy Grant will have to be a little bit careful in his career if he's going to dive about like that. I've watched three videos of Southend now, and I imagine every opposing manager will be saying the same, in terms of him going down at every opportunity and when there's any touch. He is a diver. He tries to get people booked and sent off and he's going to have to be careful. One day it might come back and hurt him."

Batt will be suspended for the next three games, and Wilder is amazingly thinking of an appeal!

Advice Chris; don't, or you're find him missing another match!

Wilder continued: "The referee was all over the place. He took centre stage and I was stunned with some of his decisions. I went in to see him at the end about that free-kick because he didn't think we had any advantage, but we were on the edge of the box just about to lob the goalkeeper!"

Grant: Late equaliser for Southend

Grant on Wilder: 'Send him a photo of the foul, he can take look with his missus'

Well, Snoop Dog was not going to take that lying down, which he was after Batt's tackle, and had a few words to say to Mr. Wilder.

Granty told www.echo-news.co.uk: "The player caught me high above my ankle and their manager is just an idiot for saying what he did. I don't know if it should have been a red card because I haven't seen it again and it all happened so quickly. But he definitely made contact with me so how is it a dive? I will even send a picture of the tackle to their manager if he wants so he can have a look at it with his missus on their sofa and realise it was a foul."

Calling managers 'idiots' is obviously the saying of the week after the Screech Luggy attack!

At least we don't have to face them again having done the double, hopefully we'll miss the joys of the Kassam Stadium as well next season, where, who knows, Chris Wilder may be looking for another job.

Anyway, the main thing is trying to get three points against Shrewsbury Town Saturday and continue our assault on the top seven.

Grant continued: "Our confidence is sky high at the moment because of our last few results we've had and we want another win tomorrow. It was a good win against Oxford but I didn't think we actually started the game that well. It wasn't until the manager put us to 4-4-2 and I had to go on the right wing that we got on top of them but it was a good performance in the end and a good result too. We want more of the same tomorrow but we will need to be on form for 90 minutes because Shrewsbury are a strong side."

The Foul; catch it here, slow it down if you can, it's after the goals!:
Southend 2-1 Oxford Utd

The 24 Verdict: Grant walks; which is more than he might have done after Tuesday's game if the tackle had connected!

Wilder has made himself look a bad loser, it was a terrible challenge.

Yes, Keith Hill is not the sharpest official around, which is why he's in League Two, but he was quite right to show a straight red, if for nothing else it was such a stupid tackle to make when you're side is only one down, plenty of time to go, and your manager has made all three substitutions; Batt's an idiot.
