Hillsborough

The FA Cup semi-final tie between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest was halted at 3.06pm

Thousands attend Hillsborough memorial service at Anfield

A special memorial service was held on Wednesday from 14.45 at Anfield to mark the 20th anniversary of the disaster.

Players will be joined by families of the victims at the service which included a two-minute silence at 15.06 - the time when the match was stopped.

April 15 1989 I was at Heathrow airport having landed after a 8 hour flight from Sri Lanka on the way back from Sydney.

The previous year had been spent travelling around the globe with no web sites then to keep up to date with results and news. Three day old papers was the best you got then.

I phoned home at 16.00: "Everything OK." "Have you heard?" "Er, no, I've lost a day on a trip from Oz." "There's trouble at the semi-final". "What semi-final?" "The Cup" "Oh, not fighting." "No, it looks worse than that."

By the evening the full horror was known.

The next Saturday I had to go to a game, I just had to be on the terraces. Southend were playing Cardiff, my first game of that 1988/89 season with a crowd of just over 3,000 in attendance, a couple of hundred Shrimpers.

Tilly played, we lost 2-0 and got relegated at the end of the season.

Somehow that didn't seem to matter.
