David Webb
Webb spoke to The Little Gazette at Worthing, where his 18-year son Daniel, on loan from the Shrimpers, was in action for Brighton & Hove Albion Reserves against United.

Needless to say we were intrigued as to what David Webb was doing following his departure from Roots Hall, "let'say I'm enjoying my retirement!" the 56-year old proclaimed.

"I've got an apartment at Brighton Marina at the moment which we're sharing with Daniel" Webb explained, he continued "it's been difficult for Daniel, he's only a youngster and he was just getting settled in at Southend when I left, so we've got this place to help him settle down"

"I've still got my home in Poole"
said Webb and he may have to move back sooner than expected as Daniel could well return to Roots Hall as Webb explained "it's not a done deal".

Was David Webb scared that he had entered retirement at a relatively young age? "No I'm not scared, what does scare me is when a doctor says 'You've got to take a break Mr Webb or you be killing yourself', that scared me" he replied, however he went on "I go back a week later though and he tells me there's nothing wrong with me - I ask him 'why scare me like that then?!' "

Of course it was David Webb's third spell in charge at Roots Hall. "It's a shame we didn't achieve anything really, I'd liked to have done, but that's football isn't it really. You need a lot of luck as well in this game" said Webb on his third stint in the Roots Hall hotseat.

Webb seemed rather shocked to see strikers Tes Bramble and Mark Rawle, both of whom he brought to the Club, strutting their stuff in the Reserves. When I informed him of the situation I told him that Phil Whelan was currently playing up there "Wheelo's up there is he!" Webb said, trying to stop himself from a little chuckle.

So who does Webb pick out from yesterday's bunch of Reserve players? "Daniel Lunan, definately. That young lad could go a long way, I always saw something in him, as long as he keeps at it, he'll go a long way" Webb replied, however Lunan wasn't the only Shrimpers youngster Webb admired, "Anthony Clark, I was always impressed with him. I always felt he could make it" Webb finished.

Webb however was remarkably surprised at the poor run of form of winger Scott Forbes, "I hear Forbesy has been struggling" he stated. "It's a shame because last season he was like a world-beater, but I know he's been struggling with injuries and it's obviously affected him. It's a shame"

Unfortunatey Webb hasn't really had a chance to watch his former Club "I haven't really had a chance" he said, "I've just been watching Daniel really". So Webb is keeping a regular tab on the form of his youngest son, but how is he doing? "Really well actually" Webb Senior answered, "He's been suspended recently and he's playing today just because he wanted a game really".

Anyway, now out of a job Webb said that it's as a Director of Football that more experienced managers see their future, but that's not a path Webb is going to follow, "That involves a lot of stabbing people in the back and that's not my style I'm afraid" he said.

The big question is, does David Webb miss being involved in the day-to-day running of a Football Club? "No, I don't miss it" Webb bluntly answered.

Needless to say we at The Little Gazette wish David Webb all the very best in the future.
