With money in the bank Robin's manager Keith Downing has made it clear he sees Gary Hooper as the natural replacement for Steve Gillespie who has joined the Farmers for around 400k.

Gary Hooper

Downing told the club's official website: "We've made an offer for Gary Hooper but we know there are other clubs in for him. He is my top target at the moment but if he doesn't come we'll move on to the next one."

Not sure you'll get an exact swap there Keith but money talks and he certainly has the dosh to gazump not only Scunthorpe but recent bidders Stockport County, who have reportedly raised the bar to 125k.

If it allows a decent bid for Charlie and the City boy, let's get moving.

Meanwhile, news from Kent has old faithful Leo Roget, still only 30, training with Southend 'B' team Gillingham.  (What is Mark Stimson up to, even making former Shrimper favourite Mark Bentley club captain? Happy he can play centre-half it seems, well done Mark, the skippers armband for you! Go on Kev, get down there!)

Other than his age I was surprised to hear he had only played five times in the last two years, the former Blues centre-half having been in the soccer wilderness since making his last League Two appearance with Oxford United back in April 2006. Last season he had a brief spell with Blue Square South outfit St. Albans City whilst playing just three matches.

Gills boss Mark Stimson reckoned the central defender looked good whilst training with the first team squad before lhey left for La Manga and will continue to work out with fitness coach Danny Ellis whilst they are away.

Speaking to the Kent Messenger, Stimson said, "His legs went well in the practice game we had on Saturday he was up against Gary Mulligan and Simeon Jackson and he did well. He looks fit and could get involved in the pre-season matches

I can still see him getting sent off at home to Oxford after the ref made one of the great howlers of the modern game, "it was the white guy ref", a decision that got Oxford back in the game for a 2-2 draw that helped seal relegation that season.

Good luck Leo, hope it works out, better luck that Drewy that is, even Stimo saw past that one and has sent Mr. Broughton home. "Drewe understands the situation" said Stimpson. I'm sure he does.
