Heybridge Swifts v Southend United - Preview

Last updated : 25 July 2002 By Mark Wallis
Rob Newman will be hoping his side can get their pre-season back on track.
Following Tuesday nights mstch with West Ham and the impending fixture with Charlton Athletic at Roots Hall on Saturday, it seems likely that the United side will be another strong one, although there are one or two familiar names missing.

Newman has disposed of trialists Mark Salter and Paulo Martins since the disappointing defeat at The Walks against King's Lynn last week, but in their place come three more new faces.

United have brought in two youngsters released from Aston Villa; Jay Smith and John McGrath whilst Wayne Burnett comes in having experienced regular Division One football with Grimsby Town.  30-year old Burnett, who cost the Mariners £100,000 in early 1998 has a wealth of League experience with Clubs such as Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers, both of whom also paid six figure sums for the creative midfielder.

Neil Jenkins, who greatly impressed during the second half against West Ham, could get another ninety minutes under his belt to impress Rob Newman, whilst youth teamer Ben Price has been drafted into the squad.

The Southend boss will once again be without Danny Maye, Stephen Broad and Tony Richards, all of whom missed Tuesday's encounter with slight knock.

As for Heybridge, this will be Swifts second warm-up match following their impressive 1-1 draw against a full strength Colchester United side on Saturday afternoon. Included in the Swifts squad are two ex-Shrimpers, 19-year old striker Jamie Window who was released by United when David Webb disposed of the majority of the Club's youth teams players, just over a year ago, and also 18-year old full back Chris Wilson who was released by United at the end of last season.
Daniel Webb could get 90 minutes at Scraley Road.
