The online newspaper that focuses solely on Northampton Town, who Southend disposed of in the semi-finals of the League Two Playoffs, reported last Friday that Christmas would be a very hectic period for anyone in League One or League Two.

It looks as if the Shrimpers will have to play on Boxing Day and then again on the 27th December in order to cram fixture in shortly after Christmas. Steve Tilsons’ men will then have to look towards New Years Eve for their next game although they will be allowed a drink that evening to celebrate the New Year. This is because there will not be a game on New Years Day but instead one day later on the 2nd January.

This move, if confirmed, comes as a bit of a shock as there seems to be no real reason for the change by the Football League. Championship teams will however finish a week earlier in order for players to prepare effectively for the World Cup that will commence in June of 2006.

Traditionally crowds are good over the Christmas period and hopefully the fixture computer can draw the Shrimpers a couple of good games. Imagine Nottingham Forest away on the 26th followed by Col U at home on the 27th!

Dates of Fixtures over the Christmas Period
26th December 2005
27th December 2005
31st December 2005
2nd January 2006
