Great Wakering Rovers v Southend United - Essex Senior Cup Preview

Last updated : 19 November 2002 By Mark Wallis
Stephen Broad returns from suspension.
With the draw for the Fourth Round having already been made, the victors know that they will be facing a trip to either Hornchurch or Southend Manor at the next stage, that match also takes place tonight.

Wakering, currently lying in thirteenth place in Division One (North) of the Ryman League, three levels below United, are expected to field all full first team against the Shrimpers which will inclide midfielder Dan Trenkle who had a month-long trial with United during last season. The home side should also feature Neville Hickton who actually works in the Southend Centre of Excellence.

As for United, they will be sending a reserve side - as indeed they often do in this competition - but the Shrimpers side still features some big names, and manager Rob Newman and assistant Steve Tilson have both given themselves starting places. Tilson in midfield and Newman on the forward line.

Neil Jenkins makes his first reserve team appearance having been dropped for Saturday's draw with Hartlepool United whilst defender Stephen Broad, returning from suspension, also makes his first second string outing of the campaign, he will be partnered by Phil Whelan, Tom Jordan and Daniel Lunan.

Tilson and Jenkins will take their place in a midfield also featuring 17-year old Anthony Clark and captain Stuart Thurgood whilst Mark Salter partners Newman upfront.

The Shrimpers bench will be made out of four youth teams players; Joe Ilett, Steven Bourne and Jamie Gray who are all 16 and 18-year old Daryl Plummer.

The game was drawn 3-3 with Yemi Abiodun, David Morley and David Whyte netting the goals before United won 5-3 on penalties with goalkeeper Mel Capleton eventually scoring the deciding spot kick. Simon Livett, Morley, Adam Morrish and Keith Dublin took United's other successful penalties.

The Southend team that night was as follows:- Mel Capleton, Garry Cross, Mark Stimson, David Morley, Adam Morrish, Keith Dublin, Nathan Jones, Simon Livett, Barry Conlon, David Whyte and Yemi Abiodun.

Southend, who last won this competition back in 1997 when they defeated Braintree Town, 2-1, after extra time in a final played at Dagenham & Redbridge's Victoria Road Ground courtesy of goals from Danish frontman Peter Dursun and youth teamer Wesley Thurley, lost out 3-0 at Purfleet at the Third Round stage last season after a decidedly poor performance.

Indeed, Southend also crashed at Ship Lane the previous season, losing 4-0 on a freezing Monday night in the Fourth Round havind defeated Harwich & Parkeston, 3-1, in the Third Round in a match which saw Chris Porter become the only United goalkeeper ever to score a goal in open play when his huge goal-kick bounced over the head of Harwich keeper Mark Fairbrother.
