The 24-year-old playmaker has been chased down by former Doncaster Rovers and Aldershot Town manager Wignall after Dagenham & Redbridge were rebuked in a £15,000 offer last week. Peterborough United were also interested, but ex-Blues boss Barry Fry was unable to raise the funds neccessary to purchase the former Tottenham Hotspur talent. The transfer, which will involve a five-figure fee, believed to be between £20,000 and £30,000, was hurried through on Wednesday afternoon after a draft contract was drawn up.

Wignall commented to the club's official website, www.southendunited.co.uk, that, "he is a quality player, certainly one of the better ones in the Conference. He is equipped with the experience of playing League football an can score goals". Gower, who has also had a spell with Scottish Premier League outfit Motherwell during a seven-year career declared, "It is a good opportunity for me; I have been out of the League for two years now". The midfielder, who is equally capable in the centre of the park or on the right touchline, added, "I think the manager wants to get down and pass it and that is what my game is all about: getting on the ball passing it and bringing other players into the game".

In other news, four fixtures have had slight amendments to their dates and timings. The Bank Holiday clash with York City, originally scheduled for Monday 25th August, will now become a normal midweek fixture on Tuesday 26th at 7:45p.m. The Boxing Day East Anglian derby encounter at the Abbey Stadium against Cambridge United is confirmed as a three o'clock kick-off, whilst the match against Scunthorpe United at Roots Hall, which was originally drawn up for Saturday 3rd April will now be a Friday night match, again starting at 7:45p.m. The Carling Cup clash with Swindon Town is now on Tuesday 12th August, also kicking-off at 7:45p.m.
