Gilbert: 'I’m really up for the season and will be giving it a real go'
Never at his best during the last campaign, Shrimpers left back Peter Gilbert is determined to show the Roots Hall faithful that with a decent pre-season behind him he can show them that he's the man for the job and will help the club get up amongst the promotion places next time around.
Gilbert told www.echo-news.co.uk: “Last season I don’t think I did myself justice at all. I didn’t perform like I have done before on a consistent basis and I want next season to be much better. I don’t want to make excuses but last year was frustrating from an injury point of view as well. I got a hernia and two ankle problems and had to play through some discomfort at times. My first injury came during pre-season which is also a vital period of the year and I want to avoid that this time. Touch wood, I can stay fit and play well because I’m really up for the season and will be giving it a real go. I genuinely enjoy being at Southend and I want to play a part in this club going back up the leagues.”
