Gilbert: 'I want to win the league'

Left-back Peter Gilbert is ready to sign a two-year contract with Southend once the club's pays off it's loan to the PFA and the transfer embargo is lifted.

And there's no doubt it's his working relationship with Shrimpers new boss Paul Sturrock, which spans over his time at Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield wednesday, that made Peter decide to commit his future to Roots Hall even though their was plenty of interest from other clubs, rumours that Championship Scunthorpe United had even been on the phone, after he decided not to sign a new contract with Northampton Town, and this with all Southend's well documented financial difficulties.

Gilbert told www.echo-news.co.uk: "I want to win the league. When I was with the manager at Plymouth we won the league in our first season and now I want to do the same with Southend, which I think is possible. We want to get promotion and win a few games, but I do firmly believe there is a bright future for this football club."

Nothing wrong with the confidence shown by young Peter here but I think the Shrimpers faithful would like to see Uncle Ron pay a few bills and another four or five players signed up before they share his enthusiasm.
