After a spell as assistant manager, he was paid off by Torquay in order to join Exeter in 2001/02, but although he was a regular last season, this year has seen increased competition and he is battling to establish himself once again.  Younger brother of ex-Blues defender Peter and former Everton player Dave.

He moved to West Brom at the end of the 1990/91 campaign but failed to nail down a spot at the Hawthorns and moved on to Swansea, where his excellent distribution was appreciated and he played in over 150 League and Cup games. A two-season campaign at Orient followed, but he was signed on a free by Exeter two years ago. Since then he has been used as an essential support for Robert Flack, but this season has brought increased competition.

This Season (Total Appearances [as substitute]/Goals): 1[6]/0
Details: Sheldon had spent his entire career at Scunthorpe before making the switch to St. James's Park in May of this year. An attacking midfielder, he had fallen out of favour with Brian Laws after the return of Alex Calvo-Garcia to first-team action in late October last year. Making just 6 starts last season meant it was time for a change, but so far he has failed to command a definite spot in the Grecians team.

Geoff Breslan
Squad Number: 13
Position: Midfielder
Age: 22 Height: 5ft 9ins Weight: 10st 5lbs

That year he made 12 substitute appearances, and he has reverted to that role again this term.

Leslie Afful
Squad Number: 22
Position: Midfielder
Age: 18 Height: 5ft 6ins Weight: 10st

This Season (Total Appearances [as substitute]/Goals): 9[1]/3
Details: Tall centre-forward to whom the Grecians look when playing the long ball. Has been a regular since his £10,000 signing from Cardiff in 1996. Managed only six goals last time around, but in his old age he is taking on the target-man role, holding the ball up and reverting to his old habits - he has picked up four bookings already in scoring three goals, a return to the days when he was a professional boxer.

Don Goodman
Squad Number: 25

Born: Leeds
Career (557 League Appearances/ 159 Goals): Bradford City (70/14), West Bromwich Albion (158/60), Sunderland (116/40), Wolverhampton Wanderers (125/33), Hiroshima (no figures available), Barnsley [loan] (8/0), Motherwell (55/9), Walsall (25/3).
This Season (Total Appearances [as substitute]/Goals): 7[1]/1
Details: Much-travelled striker who was prolific in his early career. Started out in his home county of Yorkshire with Bradford in 1983, but moved to West Brom in 1987 in order to obtain a regular first-team spot. Scored at a goal every two-and-a-half games during his time at the Hawthorns, including the 1989/90 season when he cracked home 21 goals in 39 games. Moved to Sunderland in 1991/92, keeping them in the First Division in 1992/92 with 16 goals. A switch to Wolves followed in 1994, but the goals started to dry up and spells in Japan and at Barnsley, Motherwell and Walsall have proved fruitless, and despite being a hero in the Midlands, he made a high-profile move to St. James's Park on the eve of this season.

Details: A scholar at Darlington before moving to Newcastle, the short and speedy front man never really broke into the Magpie's team and was restricted to reserve outings and loan spells at Hartlepool in 1999/2000 and again last season. Had his contract cancelled in the North East and joined Exeter on a free transfer.

This Season (Total Appearances [as substitute]/Goals): 0/0
Details: McCarthy has averaged a goal every three games over a career that has spanned 17 years. Making his move from non-League Bridgend Town, the tall striker scored 25 goals for Swansea in nearly 100 games before spells at Plymouth and Bradford. His glamour move came in 1993 when he signed for Premiership Oldham Athletic, where he struck 42 goals in 140 games. After re-joining Plymouth in 1998 he signed for Exeter prior to the start of last season, and has proved adequate support for the likes of Flack up front.

Short spells at Portsmouth and Crystal Palace preceded a successful period at Carlisle in 1999/2000, but since then he has spent a time back in Australia and another two seasons without a League game for either Carlisle or Macclesfield. Snapped up by Exeter in the summer, and has only made two substitute appearances.
