Moved to Birmingham in 1993 for a quarter of a million pounds, but after only one season at St. Andrews he went to Watford, but having seen them relegated in 1996, he crossed London to set up camp at Crystal Palace. Lost his spot under Steve Coppell in the 1999/2000 season, but fell out of favour at Barnsley last year and moved to Exeter before the start of this season on a non-contract basis.

They failed to negotiate a full contract, and he joined Torquay during the 1995/96 season. After a spell as assistant manager, he was paid off by Torquay in order to join Exeter in 2001/02, but although he was a regular last season, this year has seen increased competition and he is battling to establish himself once again. Moved to Sunderland in 1991/92, keeping them in the First Division in 1992/92 with 16 goals. A switch to Wolves followed in 1994, but the goals started to dry up and spells in Japan and at Barnsley, Motherwell and Walsall have proved fruitless, and despite being a hero in the Midlands, he made a high-profile move to St. James's Park on the eve of this season.
