Friend: 'I don't really understand why my goal wasn't given' (Spot the theme)

Sometimes you just get out of bed the wrong way, or maybe he just stepped in something nasty on the way to the ground, but whatever it was it's fair to say that George Friend did not have a good day.

First, the penalty award that led to the Latics taking a match winning lead.

George spoke to Blues Player after the game: "I'm obviously going to say it wasn't a penalty but I really don't think it was. I didn't really even make a challenge because the ball was going out of play and I was just trying to usher it out when he went down. I also slipped over but I don't think the referee was going to give it until his assistant got involved, so it was very disappointing."

He should have seen it coming as in the first half, and at the same North Bank end, he got a touch on a Simon Francis free-kick to place the ball in the net. Sadly for George, the referee had whistle in mouth.

The 21-year-old left back explained: "It was apparently because there was a foul when someone was challenging for the ball when the cross came in. The fourth official did try and explain it to me but it was just really frustrating."

How the day may have turned out for Friend if that had stood!

Anyway, it's agreed by all it was a fairly poor performance from the Blues and George couldn't argue with that point.

He concluded: "The general consensus was that we were quite flat and it did seem that way. It was hard out there but Oldham weren't great either and I think a draw would have been a fairer result."
