Decisive action pays off for Tilly

With the in-form visitors down to 10 men following an early red card to former striker Michael Ricketts, Tilly decided to field a more attacking formation for the second half.

A consistent criticism of Tilson is his usually inflexible attitude to making substitutions, sometimes waiting to the last 10 minutes giving the new player little time to influence matters. Not at the weekend!

Francis Laurent was introduced as part of a three-man strike-force and that led to Betsy and then Theo Robinson working their way onto the scoresheet as the Saddlers suffered their first defeat in seven games.

Betsy, who made 16 appearances while on loan at Walsall last season, told the Echo: "It was a fantastic decision from the manager to change the formation at half-time. It was difficult in the first half against 10 men but the alterations worked and made us better so you have to say it's excellent management because it won us the game."

The ex Bristol City wideman, who broke the deadlock against his former side with a well placed shot which flew into the bottom left hand corner of the net from the edge of the area, also had time to praise his fellow goalscorer.

"Theo did really well to find me and luckily enough I managed to find the corner, The first goal was always going to be important and that's the way it's proved. We're on a really good run at the moment and have shown how tight knit we are as a group. We've had good and bad times this season which happens in football, but the manager took some flack about certain situations and we have now shown that we can come through adversity and do well again."

The man himself was, of course, very happy to score his third goal since joining on loan from Watford, to keep up a nice symmetry, we never lose when he scores! In fact only a great save by the Saddlers keeper Ince stopped Robinson grabbing a brace on the day.

Speaking to the official site Theo said: "It was great to score and to also win but I should have scored more. The keeper is big and stayed up well towards the end when he blocked my shot with his legs. These things happen though and the most important thing is that we won. In the first half we were playing it from side to side but it was all a bit slow. It was frustrating and we weren't quick enough but in the second half we showed what we could do. We needed the points and it was great to get them."

With so many young players from Watford doing the rounds at the moment Robinson will meet up again with 21 year old midfielder Al Bangura on Tuesday as he has joined Brighton until the summer.
