Having seen Che Wilson, Nicky Nicolau and Lawrie Dudfield turn down contract offers, Steve Tilson will be relived to know that highly rated ‘Keeper, Darryl Flahavan, has confirmed that he is happy with his new contract offer and will be putting pen-to-paper in the next few days.

Darryl told the Evening Echo today "The personal terms of the contract have been sorted and everything should be signed early this week."

Flahavan signs another contract after playing over 250 games for Southend
Despite the 27-year-olds eagerness to sign on with the Blues, the former Southampton trainee could have easily joined another side, having been linked with League Two sides Grimsby, Northampton and Rushden. "I had offers to go elsewhere but staying with Southend was always my number one option because I really enjoy it here, the club is progressing and I’m delighted things have finally been agreed," Darryl commented.

Flahavan, who had an eventful battle for the number one jersey with Bart Griemink for the majority of the season, has been at the club since November 2000, when David Webb signed him on a free transfer from Conference side Woking. After becoming a favourite with the fans and playing 130 games for the club, new manager Steve Wignall then made a shocking decision.

The former Colchester Chief released Darryl and Danny Gay in the summer of 2003 and instead signed Carl Emberson and Ryan Robinson. However, when it became apparent that Emberson wasn’t up to the job, Flahavan was re-signed, ironically in November of the same year that he had been released.

Wignall was sacked shortly after, but Flahavan remained and has grown in confidence under Steve Tilson, with a little help from the excellent goalkeeping coach, Lee Turner.

Darryl has worked seriously hard on improving his game since being released by Wignall back in 2003, and is reaping the rewards, having been in consistent form throughout this season and deservedly earning himself a two-year contract.

Che Wilson
Wilson is set to join Flahavan in signing another year for Southend
In other news from Roots Hall Che Wilson is close to signing an amended deal after turning down a previous contract offer. Wilson, who has been with Southend since 2003, looks set to become the second player to extend his stay beside the seaside after Darryl Flahavan. Wilson and Flahavan both share the same agent, Richard Cody, who also has Lawrie Dudfield and Jay Smith as clients. The optimistic side in Southend fans hopes that both players can now follow the trend and sign their contracts.
