Scannell: 'I've found it hard to adjust to their style of play'
Former Shrimpers wideboy Damian Scannell will make his ton in league appearances at the weekend if he takes to the field against Southend, and after a disastrous run of results he's hoping a shock win against the league leaders is on the cards.
Scannell told www.echo-news.co.uk: "Things have to start getting better for us at some stage so hopefully that can be against Southend. We know we're in for a tough game but Victoria Road isn't an easy place to come to so hopefully we can cause an upset."
Scannell turned out 58 times during two and a half seasons at Roots Hall, and many of us believe he never had a decent run in the team, injuries of course not helping, but accepts that even his present club haven't seen the best of him yet.
He said: "It hasn't really been the greatest of times for me at Dagenham so far. We got relegated from League One last season and I've found it hard to adjust to their style of play. But it's a good club with a good set of lads and hopefully things can start to get better for me."
Of course, as with all the players in the Shrimpers squad from that sad season, money has to come in to the conversation eventually.
Scannell concluded: "Southend is a good club and I really enjoyed my time there. It was good fun and it was a real shame we got relegated but that was definitely down to everything going on off the pitch. If all that hadn't been going on then I would probably still be at Southend. But I had been in non league before coming to the club and really didn't have much money so it hit me hard when I wasn't getting paid. I was really struggling financially so that's why I had to leave, which was a shame."
It was indeed, let's hope he doesn't remind us what we've lost Saturday afternoon!
