Clarke for Charlton?

Well, it's not near Southport and it's certainly not the Championship, Charlton having been relegated to League One, Bailey and all, so has the paper done another 'Theo for Swindon' story?

According to the Echo an 'insider' said: "Peter is the type of player Charlton are looking for. He's committed and reliable and, at this moment, it does seem likely that the move will go ahead."

Who is this mysterious 'insider'? The tea lady.

Clarkey is on a free transfer, he's bound to be of interest to anyone who can top his present wages, let alone be a division higher and be north of Watford.

Charlton did play some odd combinations at the back last season, where they let in 74 goals, but the only transfer rumour in their local press is full-back Danny Butterfield from Palace, a player they've had on loan.

However, they are not rolling in it themselves, they may cash in on Bailey but 20% of that would come to us, and ex-head Farmer and present boss, Phil Parkinson, is still not sure he'll be in charge for the new season kick-off.

Talking to BBC local radio earlier this month Parkinson said: "We need to come back fighting next year. If whoever the manager's going to be can keep this group of players together we'll have a chance of coming back. The club's had a period of instability and needs a stable period. So if that wants to be changed and started all over again like the club has done several times then I'll walk out of here with my head held high."

Parkinson did take Colchester out of the third tier the season Southend won the League One championship, so he has history, but will the Charlton board give him the dosh, if they have it, to build the team he wants to?

He hasn't been sacked yet.

It's tempting as a fansite editor to place a 'Clarke, Dervite, Robinson' going to 'Norwich, Charlton, Leeds' story every other day, you know you'll get a few thousand extra hits.

TLG hopes eventually to run one that has Southend signing a player before August 8.
