The new Terriers skipper Peter Clarke told the Echo: "It was lovely and very well appreciated. You're never too sure how it's going to go and I was hopeful I wouldn't get too much stick but to get the kind of reception I did was superb and I'd like to thank the fans for that."

After seeing his side escape with a 2-2 draw in the Roots Hall clash he continued: "A lot has been made of Southend's situation during the summer but they still have Steve Tilson and Brushy at the club. They have worked hard again and you saw on Saturday that they have a good team and I'm sure they will do well again."

The Huddersfield manager Lee Clark certainly appreciates his centre-half who was making his debut: "Peter Clarke was determined Saturady but it was always going to be tough for him as he is held in high esteem here. He stayed focused and he is going to be a fantastic player and captain."
