Barker: A happy man

Barker: 'I spent most of the time on the toilet but I’m feeling better now'

Shrimpers skipper Chris Barker missed the 4-1 demolition of Torquay United at the weekend but according to the official site will be in the starting line-up to take on Barnet away Tuesday evening.

Barker told www.echo-news.co.uk: “I trained yesterday morning and felt fine so providing there’s no reaction then I should be OK to play against Barnet. It was frustrating and disappointing not being able to play at the weekend but it was the right decision as I would’ve been running on empty. I hadn’t managed to eat a meal for three or four days in the build up to the game and lost two kilograms in weight which was probably needed! I spent most of the time on the toilet but I’m feeling better now and hope to play tonight.”

Thanks for that Chris!

However, expect the in-form centre-back, what a partnership with Chris Phillips at the moment, to replace Luke Prosser, not the best of games Saturday, after clashing heads with former Shrimpers trialist Rene Howe in the second half

The former Plymouth defender also has some words of warning for those travelling to the end of the Northern Line, he doesn't expect the Bees to have lost their sting whatever their present league position.

Barker said: “It will definitely be a hard game because their players are fighting for their jobs and careers. They have some dangerous players, especially going forward and we have to be on form. We’re fully aware that the run we’re on is going to end sooner or later. However we want to be unbeaten for as long as we can and consolidate our position towards the top of the table.”
