The 24-year-old, who began his career at Coca-Cola Championship club Millwall, was released by the Mariners at the end of last season having made 29 appearances for the seaside club. The ginger-haired defender is reported to have impressed Steve Tilson during his two performances against Blues, although he did not do enough to force Russell Slade, the Town manager, to offer him a new deal at Blundell Park.

The Hackney-born left-back, who can also play on the right-hand side of a four-man defence, was allowed to leave the New Den in the summer of 2004 after loan spells at Brentford and Yeovil Town. He netted in vital wins over Notts County and Cambridge United, although he also saw himself sent off in Grimsby’s 2-1 win at Leyton Orient.

If Bull were to sign, and a deal for the one-time opponent of Southend United’s reserve side would appear to be some way from being completed, he may only be used as back-up to Che Wilson, who is on the verge of agreeing terms with the Shrimpers for 2005/6. The utility man, tagged Most Improved Player of the Season at the Shrimpers Trust End of Season awards night, was stalling on a new deal for just twelve months initially, but is now ready to put pen to paper.

He would follow Darryl Flahavan in signing up to the Shrimpers’ campaign for next season, with the goalkeeper having turned away interest from Bristol Rovers, Grimsby Town and Rushden & Diamonds. Jay Smith and Lawrie Dudfield remain the two main members of the squad yet to decide whether their futures lie at Roots Hall.
