Boston Face League Expulsion

Last updated : 16 June 2002 By Mark Wallis
Boston United celebrate promotion to the Football League in April, it looks like they could be expelled without playing a match.

The Conference Champions club offices were raided last month as part of a probe in which amongst other irregularities, Boston were accused of paying players bonuses outside of their contracts, which is exactly what Chesterfield were deducted nine points for two seasons ago.

Having been promoted to the League less than two months ago, Boston look set to return to non-league football without even kicking a ball in the Football League. The decision is expected to be announced within the next few days.

Meanwhile, Conference runners-up Dagenham & Redbridge are campaigning to take the Pilgrims place, along with Halifax Town, relegated from Division Three last season, but it looks likely that the Football League's basement division will carry only 23 sides next season.

Boston will become the first team expelled from the League since Aldershot went into liquiation in 1992, and the first side to lose their League place during the close season since Maidstone United resigned just three days prior to the 1992/93 campaign.
