ADAM Wallace and Rio Alderton had impressed Newman in the last two Reserve Team matches as trialists and the pair have both put pen to paper to sign for the Shrimpers until the end of the current campaign.

Both players are only nineteen with Alderton, born in Colchester on August 12th 1982 joining from Millwall whilst Wallace has arrived from Southampton. United have not paid a fee for either player.

The duo however signed after mid-day and so will be ineligable for both the Easter weekend matches, with the Shrimpers travelling to Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday before entertaining Exeter City at Roots Hall on Monday afternoon. Both players however are likely to feature in next Wednesday's Reserve fixture with Swindon Town at Roots Hall and will also be available for the trek to Home Park next Saturday for the match with newly-promoted Plymouth Argyle.

Meanwhile midfielder Kevin Maher, currently United's longest serving player having joined the Shrimpers ranks in January 1998, is expected to sign a new two year deal on Friday morning having rejected a 'double-your-money' switch to Leyton Orient whilst defender Leon Cort has signed a one year extension.
